GIS: Turning Data Into Insight

Updated: Sep 8, 2025

GIS is all about turning geographic data into insight—and GeoView is here to make that process effortless for everyone.

Let’s say you want to find out which Israeli cities lie within 20 kilometers of the Lebanese border.

Traditionally, you'd need to:

1. Locate a reliable source for country borders, and download the data.

2. Load the data into a GIS software.

3. Intersect the polygons of Israel and Lebanon to extract the border line.

4. Smooth the border line geometry, to remove artifacts.

5. Create a buffer zone around the smoothed border line.

6. Intersect the buffer zone with Israel’s polygon to filter out wrong points.

7. Locate a reliable source for Israeli cities, and download the data.

8. Convert the Israeli cities coordinates to the same reference frame used by the polygons and border line (usually: Spherical Mercator / Web Mercator Projection)

9. Calculate the distance of each city from the border line, and find out those which are located within the desired distance.

10. Draw the cities on the map, together with the country polygons, border line and buffer polygon.

11. Inspect the resulting map visually, and make sure the cities lie within the buffer polygon.

Sounds like a lot of steps, right?

Or… you could just ask GeoView to do it for you 😊
